Let’s Gather Round and Laugh at Mirror’s Terrible English Lyrics
One of the few flaws of Hong Kong’s beloved boy band
Mirror is the most popular boy band in Hong Kong right now.
And by the most popular, I am not just saying that a lot of people listen to their songs. I mean people in Hong Kong who don’t listen to music would have heard of them; I am describing a phenomenon where fans would line up for nights just for an opportunity to take a glimpse of their idols; where cards, folders and mugs with their faces printed on them can be sold at $12 apiece or even more on online marketplaces.
This 12-person group has rebooted the dying Cantopop music industry.
Variety magazine listed Keung To (one of the members in this group) as one of the “International Breakout Stars of 2021”; the list also features an actor from Squid Game. Keung To had proclaimed that “Mirror and all new Hong Kong musicians will make Hong Kong music industry ‘Asia’s Number 1’ again”.
Those who don’t know Korean but listen to K-pop know that K-pop songs often feature at least one English catchphrase for international fans to sing along. This seems to also be the case for Mirror’s Chinese / Cantonese songs. English lyrics are used to give out a young and energetic vibe.
